GazGain helps Quebec drivers know whether the cheaper gas detour is actually worth it.

GazGain is a free Quebec-made tool that goes beyond showing gas prices: it calculates real net savings after the fuel burned on the detour, based on the driver's vehicle, tank level and road distance.

The problem

Gas price maps show where gas is cheaper. They do not tell you whether driving there makes sense. A few extra kilometres can wipe out, or exceed, the posted pump discount.

The solution

GazGain answers one simple question: which station is actually worth the detour, in net dollars? The calculation combines the price gap, litres to fill, official vehicle fuel economy and road distance.

Quick facts

  • Available in Quebec, in French and English.
  • Usable without a required account.
  • Station prices come from public Régie de l’énergie du Québec data.
  • Vehicle consumption is based on Natural Resources Canada data.
  • Location is rounded to about 100 m and never stored precisely.

Possible media angles

  • Construction holiday travel: is the cheaper gas detour actually worth it?
  • Cost of living: the per-litre discount can be misleading once you count the drive.
  • Local tool: a simple way to avoid burning your savings while chasing cheaper gas.
  • Return of the federal excise tax: how to compare stations when prices rise again.

Founder: Amir Youssef

I created GazGain because I wanted to make sense of gas prices and know whether it was actually worth driving farther for cheaper gas. I figured that if I needed it, other Quebec drivers would probably find it useful too.

Privacy

GazGain is designed to provide a useful recommendation without keeping more data than necessary. Exact location is not stored precisely and personal data is not resold.
